Thank you for considering adoption

If you are thinking about adopting a dog, we recommend reading the information below. You will learn how to proceed with adoption, what the adoption process looks like, and what is important to consider before making the final decision.

Adoption procedure

Every dog is unique, just like their needs and requirements for a new home. In each dog’s profile, you will find as much information as possible, such as age, personality, life story (if known), and important details about their relationship with other dogs, cats, children, and other animals.

If a dog has caught your attention and you believe you can offer them a suitable home, please contact us.

The adoption process

Contact us by email or phone. During an initial phone consultation, we will go over the basic information about your possibilities and conditions for welcoming a new dog. If everything matches the dog’s needs, we will create a WhatsApp group including members of our organization and the person currently caring for the dog.

In this group, we discuss details such as your housing, space for the dog, family composition, other animals, and the environment in which the dog would live. We also require photos of your home environment and completion of a pre-adoption questionnaire.

Every adoption application is assessed individually. Dogs from the Balkans are not suitable for everyone — our goal is to find a truly suitable and safe home for each dog.

If both sides agree to proceed with the adoption, we arrange transport to the Czech Republic. You will pick up the dog on the day of arrival at the Hand for Help training and rehabilitation center in Šumava.

Before the handover, an adoption contract will be signed and an adoption fee paid. The fee ranges from CZK 3,000 to 5,800, depending on the individual dog. The dog will travel to the new family vaccinated against rabies and infectious diseases, microchipped, dewormed, treated against fleas, and tested for Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and dirofilariasis. For some dogs, blood tests are also performed depending on the environment they come from.

Dogs older than one year are neutered before adoption. Puppies must be neutered by their new owners once they reach the appropriate age.

Adoption

After the dog is placed in your care, we will stay in regular contact with you and ask for updates—photos or videos—so we can see how the dog is doing in their new home. If, for serious reasons, you are no longer able to care for the dog, it is essential that you inform us as soon as possible so we can arrange for the dog to be taken back into our care. Without our consent, it is not permitted to rehome the dog to a new owner. Please also inform us of any serious events, such as the dog running away, illness, or death.

Thank you for giving these dogs a chance to find a new and better home!

What do you need to consider before adopting a dog from the Balkans?

Adopting a dog is a commitment for many years. Your dog may be part of your life for ten, fifteen years or more, so it is important to answer a few essential questions before making this decision:

Am I ready to dedicate time and care to a dog every day?
A dog needs regular walks, playtime, and training. A lack of attention can lead to stress, destructive behavior, and other issues. Consider whether your lifestyle allows for this daily care.

Can I be patient with a dog that may be fearful or have difficulty adapting?
Many dogs from the Balkans have gone through traumatic experiences. They may react with fear, distrust, or defensive behavior. Think about whether you can gradually build trust without punishment and with a great deal of patience. These behaviors often appear only after the dog arrives in a new environment.

Do I have enough time and energy for the dog’s socialization and adaptation?
Adaptation can take weeks to months, sometimes even years. The dog learns trust, rules, and how to live with a family. Consider whether you can manage training, whether you have enough emotional resilience, and the willingness to deal with challenges when they arise. If you need advice on training, we are always here to help, but you must be patient and consistent.

Does my household provide a suitable environment for a dog?
Balkan dogs often need space — a garden or enough room in an apartment, along with regular walks. Consider whether you can offer a safe environment, a quiet place to rest, and space for toys and a bed.

How will I handle the presence of other animals or small children?
A dog needs time to get used to new animals and family members. Think about whether you can ensure safety while also teaching everyone involved how to live together.

Am I prepared for the financial costs?
In addition to the adoption fee (CZK 3,000–6,000), you must account for food, veterinary care, vaccinations, deworming, parasite prevention, medication, and equipment. Unexpected health issues can be demanding, especially for dogs coming from poor conditions.

What else should you consider before adoption?

Am I ready for long-term adaptation?
A dog may be fearful, restless, or have old habits. Be prepared for a gradual transition, calmness, consistency, and support during socialization.

How will caring for a dog affect my life plans?
Consider relocation, work, or family changes. A dog needs stability and a predictable routine.

Can I respect the adoption rules?
Without the organization’s consent, it is not permitted to transfer the dog to another owner. If problems arise, you must be prepared to return the dog to the organization’s care.

Can I accept the dog as they are?
Every dog has their own personality, temperament, and needs. Consider whether you can provide a safe and loving home even with possible health or psychological challenges.

Adopting a dog is a responsible step that requires time, patience, and commitment. If you are confident that you are ready, we will be happy to help you find the right dog who will be your loyal companion for many years.
